Unfortunately though, we have a habit of treating our dogs to foods we consume ourselves… it’s so hard to resist those adoring, pleading eyes watching our every bite…
but many foods and their ingredients are simply not good for dogs. They can be high in fat, salt, sugar, and in some cases, are toxic to our canine buddies (see ‘No-
What about commerical dog treats I hear you ask? Well, they’re often expensive, offer little in the way of nutritional value despite the marketing hype, and more often than not,
include ingredients not fit for human consumption. Consider also, that those ingredients include meat and cereal by- I know I’m not the only one who has the philosophy of not feeding anything to our fur babies that we wouldn’t eat ourselves, so all of my recipes strictly consist of dog- Human nutrition and food science have been a part of my life for decades. Why not apply my food science knowledge (with input from my vet and using established international pet
nutrition guidelines) to create my own dog treat recipes that are nutritionally sound? So I did and Canine Canapés was born. Now I would like to share my treats with other canine parents. Now when your bestie gives you the ‘look, with the accompanying drool’ when you’re munching on something tasty, you can treat her to a guilt- It’s critical you speak to your vet to determine if my treats are right for your baby at her life stage and/or if she has any health issues.
And it isn’t just big brand manufacturers that are not transparent. You’ve probably seen the ‘Pet Bar’ at Coles, or perhaps have purchased treats from online sellers or at local markets.
If you were to ask a seller what are the actual ingredients, where were they sourced from, what manufacturing process was involved, and if nutrition information is provided, how did they
come about that information, in all likelihood they wouldn’t be able to tell you because they do not know.
And hey, my canapés look, smell and taste darned good too!
